Responsibilities

Position Summary:

 

The Security Officer provides protection for all persons and property safety within the organization and its
environment. Provides customer service and ensures orderly parking. Responds to security needs of hospital
personnel quickly and effectively

 

Essential Duties:

 

• Patrols Medical Center complex, including all buildings and grounds, to provide a visible deterrence
in preventing criminal and prohibited activity (fire, accidents). Ensures safety and unauthorized entry,
including inspecting doors, windows and locks to determine level of security.


o At the beginning of an assigned shift the Security Officer will be in uniform and prepared for
duty.
o Each officer will be responsible for obtaining an update on activities of importance to
department operations. This includes discussions with someone from the previous shift, and
reading and signing the brief, operations and daily activities logs.
o Officer will sign on with the Dispatcher.
o Officers will report to the assigned area to relieve the previous shift at that location (i.e. Parking
Lot, Emergency Department, Front Desk, etc.).


• Responds quickly and effectively to all calls for service


o Responds within a Seven Minute Window.
o Prioritizes calls.
o Reports Service Call Failure to Supervisor and/or Director


• Ensures only authorized personnel are admitted onto hospital premises.


o Work with CMMC service entities during VIP visits to; ensure parking accommodations, to
minimize interruptions, and will adjust patrols of areas involved as directed.
o Direct the handling/processing of Court documents, by Law Enforcement/Court Officials.
o Work with Law Enforcement officials, acting in an official capacity, while maintaining
confidentiality. Security will review emergency codes with Law Enforcement Officers that are
on property for thirty (30) minutes or longer.
o Ensure all weapons brought in to the facility, by those not authorized in their official capacity,
are removed from the facility.
o Issue and enforce Criminal Trespass Warnings.


• Assures orderly, safe, and efficient access and parking for patients, visitors and employees as
needed/upon request.


o Escorts visitors, patients and personnel to and from parking areas.
o Officers assigned to outside areas will patrol all parking locations and will report, on the proper
written violation form, for non-compliance with hospital standing orders regarding parking.
o Reports all safety concerns on the property outside including weather conditions that might
impact parking or safe travel.
o Provides standbys in parking lots as directed.


• Assists motorists who become stranded on hospital property.


o Provides assistance with jump start of vehicles with battery booster pack


• Performs Dispatcher responsibilities.


o Maintains all logs at the Information/Dispatch desk to include: Deceased Log, Security Log,
etc.
o Performs After Hours Visitor Sign-ins at the Emergency Department Security Desk
o Performs Emergency Lock-Downs of CMMC, Bridgton and Rumford hospitals via the
CCURE monitoring program.


• Responds in a timely manner and reports all incidents occurring on hospital property and submits an
incident report after the investigation to the director by end of shift.


o Serves as Security Code Responders (ie., Code Gray, Code Pink, etc.)
o Serves as Campus Security Authority for the MCHP by responding to, and reporting all, Clery
Act crimes


• Writes accurate, clear and legible incident/Midas reports and documents investigative steps and
results.
• Responds to all emergency/alarm(s) calls for assistance, with a minimum of 2 Officers, to control
behavioral issues, disorderly conduct or combative patients.


o Responds to all trauma alert patients arriving in the Emergency Department
o Utilizes verbal de-escalation and crisis intervention techniques
o Utilizes Care & Restraint Techniques
o Utilizes Active Shooter response techniques
o Utilizes safe handcuffing techniques in extreme life-threatening situations (only)


• Conducts searches, at the request of staff, when reasonable suspicion has been established, to provide
a safe environment for patients, visitors, and employees.


o Assists with inspection of incoming/outgoing parcels
o Utilizes Garrett Search Wand and search gloves as needed.


• Performs Services to Departments/Practices, and patients to ensure safe handling of monies.


o Performs pick up of bank bags from departments & practices and deposits the money at the
bank as requested/scheduled.
o Collects patient valuables, as requested, and places them in the Security Safe.


• Assists with patient lifting/moving as requested, and at the direction of clinical staff.


o Responds to requests for in-patient lifting assistance in a timely manner.
o Assists with loading and off-loading of patients utilizing Lifeflight of Maine Services.
o Uses appropriate body mechanics and lifting techniques and will not attempt any patient lift
unless all safety precautions (including having adequate help) are in place.


• Escorts customers and employee as needed and requested.
• Operates Security Department vehicles and bicycle in a safe and efficient manner at all times.


o Must meet CMHC driving record criteria.
o Must notify Director of any moving violations and/or traffic accidents in a timely manner.


• Monitors the hospital using electronic security equipment (closed-circuit television, alarms, HUGS
infant security system, etc.).


o Serves as Infant/Child abduction responder.
o Utilizes training in Security equipment (Access Control, CCTV, etc.)


• Complies with and Enforces all organizational policies and procedures as assigned by Administration
and the Security Director.


o Reports all safety and fire hazards observed on routine patrols and inspections to appropriate
personnel.
o Minimum of 1 Safety Violation/Hazard reported per month.
o Completes Maintenance Work Order Requests via the portal.
o Reference Joint Commission /CMMC Safety policies when possible
o Enforces proper wearing of Identification badges


• Processing of Deceased Patients


o Dispatcher gathers all necessary information prior to pick up of deceased patient.
o Officer responds as requested for deceased removal and release in a timely manner.
o Officer works with Nursing Supervisor, Lab and Outside Agencies to ensure all procedures
occur prior to release.


• Participates in performance improvement activities as requested (ie., Standard Work, Security tasks,
etc.)
• Performs switchboard responsibilities as directed:


o Operates an electronic switchboard as needed, to route incoming calls and to place outgoing
calls.
o Provides census information to internal and external inquirers.
o Demonstrates the ability to access language services upon request, including TTY services.
o Knowledgeable of emergency codes to be used over the PA system, pager system and can send
computer messages.
o Provides hospital information and directions to patients/visitors as needed.
o Demonstrates the ability to access a list of all facility staff on-call, including home phone
numbers and pager numbers.


• Demonstrates knowledge of the principles of growth and development over the life span. He/she shall
be able to identify each patient's age-specific needs and promote a secure environment needed by the
patient group.
• Customer Services: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support
and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service. Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all internal
and external customers at all times.


o Consistently initiates interaction to provide assistance to individuals who may not be direct
customers of the employee (i.e. asks patients who appear to be lost if they need assistance in
finding their way).
o Takes appropriate action to recover from a service difficulty, ensuring that the necessary action
is taken to affect a resolution to the customer’s problem.
o Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including the maintenance of a ant an
environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations.
o Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner,
venting emotions appropriate to time and place.
o Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling
absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only
when unavoidable circumstances exist.

 

Qualifications

Education and Experience:


• High School Diploma or GED equivalent.
• Must possess a current, active Maine Driver’s License with no court-imposed restrictions.
• This CMHC position must meet the criteria for evaluating vehicle operator suitability. It has been
determined that this position requires either the operation of a system or leased vehicle or the use of a
personal vehicle for business purposes on a regular basis an integral part of the job.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:


• Ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge required.
• Knowledge of investigative procedures, de-escalating violence, hospital security, infant abduction and
protection mechanisms preferred.
• Ability to engage patients and team members utilizing the CMH Experience Standards
