Position Summary:
Orders, receives and stocks linens from Laundry in order to assure that linen is always available for departmental and patient use.
Essential Duties:
• Receives daily linen from Laundry, monitors inventory par levels and quality standards to assure that the hospital has an adequate supply of acceptable quality linen for all areas of service. Completes tasks with no service difficulties as observed by supervisor.
o Makes certain that accurate amounts of linen have been shipped from Laundry. Contacts
laundry to address overages and shortages.
o Consistently provides courteous and prompt service to all customers on a daily basis, having
all carts backfilled and the linen room ready for 2nd shift.
o Ensures proper unloading of clean linen onto shelves; consolidating all carts.
• Coordinates all linen supply and distribution activities to maintain the flow of work in the Linen Room, as observed by supervisor.
o Accurately restocks specialty carts.
o Ensures proper stocking and backfilling of linen exchange carts.
o Records special requests and fills orders accordingly.
o Answers pages promptly and courteously.
• Maintains accurate files, reports and paperwork relating to departmental operations to ensure easy access to information for end of the month reports. Provides information to department office on a timely basis as observed by department supervisor.
o Maintains accurate records of all linen cuts or ordered daily and all linen delivered by Laundry.
o Keeps accurate records of all damaged, substandard linen.
o Ensures that all exchange cart records are maintained accurately.
o Submits all records on a daily basis to office.
• Accurately evaluates levels and recommends adjustments and changes in order to optimize the level of linen service throughout the institution.
o Informs supervisor of areas that continually exceed their linen quotas.
o Continually evaluates linen usage according to patient census and makes quota adjustments
accordingly.
o Tracks all special needs areas, such as isolation cases, maternity, ED, and others in order to
address needs in a timely fashion.
• Accurately monitors and identifies exceptional losses and evaluates security on an ongoing basis to control cost and ensure an uninterrupted flow of linen.
o Maintains an awareness of the linen flow both in and out of the hospital.
o Monitors any unusual loss or usage.
o Immediately reports any linen leaving the area without proper documentation by user.
o Monitors laundry being handled in the Cage area and in-house laundry area.
• Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support,
and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
o Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all internal and external customers at all times.
o Consistently initiates interaction to provide assistance to individuals who may not be direct customers of the employee (i.e. asks patients who appear to be lost if they need assistance in finding their way).
o Takes appropriate action to recover from a service difficulty, ensuring that the necessary action is taken to affect a resolution to the customer’s problem.
o Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including the maintenance of a
pleasant and professional environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations.
o Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner,
venting emotions appropriate to time and place.
o Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only when unavoidable circumstances exist.
Education and Experience:
• High school diploma or general equivalency diploma (GED) preferred.
• A successful candidate must have the ability to monitor, maintain and move large volumes of linen. Multiple, full-size exchange carts (requiring between 50 and 75 lbs force) must be filled, refilled and delivered to all patient care areas routinely. This active position requires a self-directed person who is detail oriented, likes to be challenged, and can function independently, changing priorities as the need arises.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence and memos, preferred.
• Ability to write simple correspondence, preferred.
• Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients and other employees of the organization.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge preferred.
