Position Summary:
The Radiation Therapist performs responsibilities associated with the localization of tumors and the
administration of radiation therapy. Responsible for patient safety protocols. Participates in the department's
performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
Essential Duties:
• Responsible for the care and safety of patients undergoing radiation therapy and use of equipment to
minimize hazards of electric shock, burns and extraneous radiation to patients.
• Provides care appropriate to condition and age of the patient, including geriatric and general
population.
• Responsible for safe handling of equipment; performs a pre-procedure check on all equipment;
provides preventative maintenance.
• Instructs and prepares patients for radiation therapy procedures.
• Determines most suitable anatomical posture and positions and shields patients accordingly.
• Reviews prescribed dosage of ionizing radiation for accuracy before all treatments.
• Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
• Practices medical and surgical asepsis at all times.
• Observes patient reaction to radiation therapy; reports any patient changes to the radiation oncologist.
• Demonstrates ability to assess patient pain interfering with treatment procedure - makes appropriate
physician contact for intervention.
• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the
likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Ensures documentation meets current standards and policies.
• Assists in maintaining basic records and reports.
• Assists in maintaining files.
• Assists in training of students and ancillary personnel.
• Interacts professionally with patient/family. Treat patients and families with respect and dignity.
• Maintains a good working relationship within the department and with other departments.
• Adheres to local fire and safety regulations.
Education and Experience:
• High School graduate; BS degree preferred.
• Graduation from an AMA approved school of Radiation Therapy Technology.
• Registered with the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT).
• Certified by the State of Maine to practice and administer radiation.
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge.
