Position Summary:
The Emergency Services Director position at CMMC is a key leadership and management position within the
Central Maine Health Care (CMHC). This individual’s primary responsibility is to ensure the provision of
exceptional emergency care in a safe and trustful environment resulting in optimal patient/family outcomes.
The director provides oversight for the overall growth and development of their assigned department(s)
incorporating the objectives, policies and procedures of the nursing department and CMH Services. The
director is responsible for effective leadership, assuring clinical excellence, supporting professional
development, promoting teamwork, collaboration and accountability, and managing the business of their
respective units.
Essential Duties:
Leadership
• The nursing process is used to support the mission, vision and values of the organization.
• Empowers, supports and inspires direct care nurses to work toward a shared mission and vision by
analyzing assessment data, identifying problems, and using critical thinking skills to make decisions
needed to provide the best possible patient care.
• Assesses nursing practice, standards of patient care and work environment by evaluating data from
staff satisfaction survey, staffing effectiveness, core measures, national patient safety goals, patient
satisfaction, unit- based and hospital-wide performance improvement and nurse- sensitive indicator
data.
• Identifies opportunities for improvement and utilizes the Performance Improvement Model of P-D-CA to initiate change.
• Develop, implement and evaluate systems and processes that support direct care nurses in the delivery
patient care that is safe, effective, efficient, timely and equitable.
• Provides a safe work environment for all staff.
• Upholds and consistently acts in concert with the ethical values and principles of the profession and
the organization.
• Assures that the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses is used to guide nursing practice.
• Utilizes the ENA standards and principles to guide the emergency services specific practice.
• Assures that patients are educated on the Patient’s Bill of Rights
• Assures that nurses are educated on the Bill of Right for Nurses
• Recognizes ethical issues in clinical practice and assists the direct care nurse to seek expert
consultation.
• Follows hospital policy for dealing with illegal, incompetent, or impaired practice.

the management of patient care.

• Conducts performance evaluations with employees in area of responsibility according to CMHC
policy.
• Serves as a resource to clinical staff, i.e. patient assessment, planning, intervention and evaluation,
revolving conflict, and resource allocation.
• Assures supervision for clinical personnel, and students assigned with the department.
• Works collaboratively with other Directors to assure a high level of service to the patient and the
department.
• Maintains a safe environment for patients and staff conducive to wellness

• Develops and maintains trusting relationships with staff, physicians and peer’s hospital wide.
• Promotes positive interdepartmental relationships within the organization through working
collaboratively on day-to-day operations and long-term projects.
• Provides direct care nurses with support and access to education and development programs that help
staff develop collaborative decision-making skills. Education to include goal setting, negotiation,
facilitation, conflict management, performance improvement.
• Values each team member’s contribution by giving power and respect to each person’s voice and
ideas.
• Communicates both positive and negative feedback to staff from patients, staff as a learning
opportunity.
Professional Development
• Actively supports the development of nurses through the identification of goals, both in the form of
personal goals the director care nurse would have for self as well as growth opportunities the nurse

Managing the Business
• Utilizes input from health care team to identify and prioritize unit-based and organizational Programs
for new service lines
• Identifies and implements internal and external marketing strategies for area of responsibility
• Recommends capital, FTE and expense budgets for area of responsibility, utilizes appropriate data to
monitor adherence to approved budget, and identifies rational for budget variances.
• Responsible for the human resource management in a designated patient care area and assures
adequate staff to meet patient care needs
• Develops goals and objectives for the department on an ongoing basis. Implements, evaluates, and
documents goal outcomes.
• Collaborates with the CNO/Senior Leadership for consultation, support, guidance, and
personal/professional development in planning for the department.
• Participates in setting, ensuring congruency between the plans, and evaluates outcomes related to unit
and hospital strategic plans
• Creates and presents business plans to support proposed recommended projects
• Develops operational plans to support the hospital's strategic plan.
• Works collaboratively with organization resources to develop a succession plan and recruiting
strategies.
• Ensures policies and procedures are up to date, reflect Evidence-Based Practice Standards of care and
meet regulatory requirements.
• Aware of National Practice changes in their clinical area and works with the staff to develop plans to
address the changes
• Collaborates with nurses to assure that material resources are available and in working order.
• Empowers the nurse to identify staffing requirements to meet patient care needs on a shift-to-shift basis
and in Professional Practice Committee to propose staffing care patterns
• Responsible for ensuring a caring, healing environment that assures positive patient/family outcomes.
Education and Experience:
• Current nursing registration in the State of Maine.
• Masters of Science in Nursing (or actively pursuing) or equivalent higher degree and national specialty
nursing certification is required.
• Minimum five years of progressive leadership experience required across patient care areas
