Job Profile Description
The Tech in Surgery Intern will learn to function in both non-sterile and sterile capacities by creating an optimal environment for the procedural patient. The Tech in Surgery Intern will learn and possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate invasive, therapeutic, and / or diagnostic procedures. The course and clinicals will be led and coordinated by the Surgical Technologist Educator. The Tech in Surgery Intern will learn to perform a wide range of duties including but not limited to aseptic technique, sterile technique, scrubbing, point of care decontamination and sterilization. In addition, the Tech in Surgery Intern will be in compliant with the Mission and Values of Central Maine Healthcare and utilizing the CMH Service Standards.
Job Description
Essential Content of the Training Program:
Develops and maintains competency to scrub procedures:
· Develops and practices aseptic technique, sterile technique, and maintains universal precautions.
· Maintains and acquires knowledge of instruments including identification and proper use and appropriate decontamination / sterilization.
· Practices under the direct supervision of the Surgeon and RN within the scope of practice of a Certified Surgical Technologist in the room.
· Age-Specific Knowledge & Skills – Possesses the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to meet patients’ physical, psychological and social needs with those growth and development levels/patient populations served within the department.
· Teamwork: Consults and collaborates with colleagues to improve the quality, effectiveness, and efficiency of patient care.
· Education: The Tech in Surgery Intern demonstrates a commitment to lifelong learning through self-identification of learning needs, by participating in ongoing educational activities, and by seeking experiences that reflect current practice in order to maintain skills and competence.
· Other duties and projects as assigned.
Professional Accountabilities:
-The Tech in Surgery Intern demonstrates effective communication skills, appropriate resource utilization and outstanding patient service skills.
-Adheres to dress code, appearance is neat and clean. Operating room scrubs are provided as well as PPE.
-Reports to class on time and as scheduled, completes work within designated time.
-Wears identification while in training, notifies instructor if unable to attend class.
-Represents the organization in a positive and professional manner.
-Follows policies and procedures related to medical legal matters, including confidentiality, amendments of the medical records, patient rights, medical records as legal evidence and informed consent.
-Maintains a safe work environment and performs duties of the position in a manner consistent with ensuring the safety of self and others.
-Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including maintenance of a pleasant and professional environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations.
-Education and Experience:
-High School Diploma or GED
-BLS required
-Has been a Central Maine employee for at least one year
