Position Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner is responsible for providing primary healthcare to patients and families, focusing on health maintenance, disease prevention, patient education and counseling. Works according to Maine State Rules and Regulations following established Policies and Procedures as required and within established scope of practice. Must be a friendly, energetic and team-oriented person looking for a long-term commitment. Proficient use of an EMR system, excellent communications skills and pediatric experience a plus.
Essential Duties:
• Demonstrates the ability to perform physical exams on all age appropriate patients.
• Obtains and documents patient's medical history. Identifies health risk factors.
• Demonstrates the ability to assess, diagnose and treat acute illnesses.
• Demonstrates the ability to assess, diagnose and treat chronic illnesses.
• Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the
likelihood of medical/health care errors.
• Orders and interprets diagnostic tests, procedures, i.e., laboratory work, x-rays, EKG.
• Demonstrates the ability to prescribe medications and non-pharmacological therapies based on the
patient's diagnoses, health history and age.
• Applies standardized care guidelines in clinical practice.
• Provides patient and/or family with health education and counseling and referrals to appropriate
healthcare professionals and community resources.
• Assesses and documents patient and/or family psychosocial issues.
• Treats patients and families with respect and dignity.
• Collaborates with physicians and other members of the health team to plan optimal care for the patient.
• Works with the patient and family to formulate a patient treatment and education plan.
• Provides follow-up care, determines effectiveness of the treatment plan, reassesses and changes the
plan as needed.
• Documentation meets all standards and policies. Documentation includes all findings, interventions
and results.
• Functions as a patient and family advocate.
• Consults with physicians and/or other health care providers when appropriate.
• Coordinates patient care and makes referrals as indicated.
• Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function under stressful situations.
• Participates in performance improvement and continuous quality improvement (CQI) activities.
• Stays current with medical advancements, new technology, new drugs through continuing education
classes, society meetings, professional journals etc.
• Follows the five medication rights and reduces the potential for medication errors.
• Attends required departmental, organizational and medical staff committee meetings as appropriate.
• Assists with development and implementation of specific policies and procedures.
• Customer Service: Interacts with all individuals in a consistent manner, providing attention, support,
and assistance to foster an environment of exceptional personal service.
o Maintains a pleasant and helpful demeanor, and presents a professional appearance toward all
internal and external customers at all times.
o Consistently initiates interaction to provide assistance to individuals who may not be direct
customers of the employee (i.e. asks patients who appear to be lost if they need assistance in
finding their way).
o Takes appropriate action to recover from a service difficulty, ensuring that the necessary action
is taken to affect a resolution to the customer’s problem.
o Conducts all work activities with respect for coworkers, including the maintenance of a
pleasant and professional environment, fostering calmness during stressful situations.
o Interacts with supervisory personnel in a professional, supportive and courteous manner,
venting emotions appropriate to time and place.
o Demonstrates a commitment to service by consistent attendance and punctuality, scheduling
absences according to departmental requirements, and incurring unplanned absences only
when unavoidable circumstances exist.
Education and Experience:
• Current Registered Nurse and Advanced Practice Nurse License in the State of Maine.
• Master's Degree in Nursing from an accredited program.
• National Certification as a Nurse Practitioner or certification eligible.
• Current American Heart Association Healthcare Provider BLS required.
• Current ACLS Certification preferred.
• Current PALS Certification preferred if caring for Pediatric patients.
• Current DEA with no restriction
• Strong computer skills, including EMR/EHR.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Ability to communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Additional languages preferred.
