A physiatrist is a medical doctor who diagnoses, treats, and rehabilitates patients with temporary or permanent physical impairments or disabilities, focusing on improving their quality of life, function, and mobility.
Essential Duties:
Diagnose and treat disabling conditions affecting the nervous and musculoskeletal systems, such as acute and chronic injuries, pain, and acute and chronic illnesses to improve quality of life, function and mobility.
Perform thorough patient evaluations using physical and neurological exams, as well as diagnostic tools like electromyography (EMG), nerve conduction studies, imaging studies (x-rays, MRIs, CT scans).
Develop individualized treatment plans with a holistic, "whole person" approach, considering how a condition or diagnosis affects a patient's entire life, not just the area of injury.
Prescribe and administer treatments and procedures, which can include:
Medications for pain and spasticity.
Therapeutic exercises and regimens, referral to therapy, osteopathic manipulative therapy, aquatic therapy, chiropractic care
Injections (joint, bursa, trigger point, botulinum toxin for spasticity or dystonia).
Nerve block procedures.
Interventional spinal procedures (epidural steroid injections, medical branch blocks, radiofrequency ablation etc)
Manage assistive devices by prescribing and overseeing the use of orthotics (braces), prosthetics (artificial limbs), and adaptive equipment like wheelchairs, walkers, canes.
Oversee and run bimonthly prosthetic clinic
Provide long-term medical management for complex conditions such as spinal cord and brain injuries, stroke, multiple sclerosis, and arthritis (inpatient/outpatient)
Offer counseling and education to patients and their families to help them understand and adapt to lifestyle changes related to their condition. (inpatient/outpatient)
Education and Experience, Licensing Requirements:
Education: A Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree from an accredited medical school.
Residency: Completion of a four-year residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
Medical License: An unrestricted state medical license to practice medicine.
Board Certification: Board certification in PM&R is required by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (ABPMR).
Subspecialty Fellowship (Optional): Many physiatrists pursue additional training in areas like sports medicine, pain medicine, or pediatric rehabilitation.
Clinical Skills: Proficiency in advanced diagnostic techniques such as electromyography and nerve conduction studies and interventional spinal procedures.
Interpersonal Skills: Excellent communication, empathy, and the ability to work effectively with patients, families, and a collaborative care team.
