Central Maine Healthcare is seeking a Histotechnologist to join our Medical Laboratory team at Central Maine Medical Center!
This is a full-time, 40 hours per week, benefit eligible position.
Position Summary:
The Histotechnologist has the ability to perform routine and complex procedures in Anatomic Pathology in the preparation of surgical, post mortem, bone marrow, cytologic and other specimens for gross and microscopic analysis.
The histology technologist works independently, organizes work to meet established
deadlines, records all data obtained, and maintains job competence. The job also involves effective communication, leadership and interpersonal skills. The histology technologist will assume the responsibility of the supervisor in their absence.
Education and Experience:
• Nationally recognized certification credentials or equivalent.
• Baccalaureate degree in histology or related life science with approved training is preferred.
• Nontraditional routes to establish skill level may be accepted after review of experience and education.

• Consult with and keep pathologist's assistant informed of activities, needs, and problems.
• Function effectively in all sections of the histology lab as assigned. Plan, organize and prioritize work duties to accomplish daily objectives.
• Perform duties according to established standards and procedures, using proper technique and equipment in the performance of duties to assure biological and physical safety, and accuracy.
• Properly identifies and labels all specimens received and collected, and properly identifies specimens during handling, logging, processing and storage.
• Discards/stores specimens upon completion of procedures.
• Follows written procedures to independently perform routine histology procedures which may include,
but is not limited to, the following:Paraffin tissue embedding and microtomy, Hematoxylin/Eosin, and special staining techniques, frozen section preparation, immunoperoxidase staining, cell block and cytology preparation and staining, stain preparation.
• Assists pathologists or radiologists as needed in the collection of specimens.
• Communicates specimen requirements, and basic technical information to other personnel.
• Routinely performs quality control and maintenance procedures on procedures and equipment as a part of normal workflow.
• Resolves problems with quality control and equipment as they arise.
• Accurately identifies problems encountered in routine workflow, and reports these problems to the Pathologist's Assistant or other charge personnel.
• Performs complex troubleshooting, and corrective maintenance procedures independently.
• Consults with supervisory personnel and responds to their direction.
• Participates in continuing education, meeting the established requirements for continuing education.
• Assists in the departmental inventory program as assigned. Maintains adequate supply of prepared reagents and control slides.
• May assist in the performance of post mortem examinations.
• Develops new procedures and testing methods under the supervision of Pathologist's Assistant.
• Judgment and decision-making.
• Organize and prioritize workflow of histology section.
• Understands the scientific and biological factors associated with laboratory testing.
• Management and Training.
• Participates in training and development of new employees, equipment or procedures.
• Assume responsibility of the supervisor in their absence.
• Participate in relevant continuing education and shares knowledge with co-workers.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Able to effectively communicate in English, both verbally and in writing.
• Strong written and verbal skills.
• Additional languages preferred.
• Basic computer knowledge.
